GMail Spam

Well I guess it had to happen.

Just received my first Spam item in Gmail.

Interesting because I have never used that GMail address other than to
mail myself. I have also not made it public in any way - other than
providing invites to a couple of friends.

Just goes to show - you can't hide from the spammers.

It's easy to sniff out most addresses. What's the user part of your
address (before the @gmail.com part)? These can easily be guessed by
dictionary attacks and so on.

Yes I have noticed this kind of thing before.

The actual address used was (e-mail address removed) which is not my GMail
address, however it is not dissimilar.

I assume it uses some letters then massmails to variations and
presumably uses the bcc address line.

A lot of the spam I have received through other ISP's or web mail
addresses are not actually addressed to my specific email address.

Yeah, me too but mine may be guessable.

Actually I don't know why I keep gmail - other than being the first on
my block to get it. I don't use it and no one else I know was
interested

I'm in the same boat, but am using it to store a couple of documents
"off site".

In fact I sent "myself" a couple of invites under pseudonyms so I now
have 4 gigs of off site storage available.

Wouldn't use it as a sole storage site, but it provides a useful
backup.
