Gmail - Phantom Sending Mail

I hope that someone can help me out. I set up my Outlook to work with POP
through gmail. A friend sent an email along with "read receipt" attached, and
I said YES. However, there was an error sending that "read receipt" - and my
Outlook has been having problems ever since.

It keeps looking for that email to send "Sending message 1 of 1" - but I
cannot find it in the Outbox or Sent Items. An error message keeps on popping
up, and my incoming & outgoing mail does not work properly anymore. I would
like to delete this phantom message that Outlook is searching for, but I
cannot find out how.
