Definitely Gimp is much closer to PS than any other freeware image
editor. There are several features in Gimp what makes it comparable to
PS. Of course there are also plenty of features in PS that cannot be
found from any another software.

I think that Gimp would be considered as a nearly 'serious' image
editing software if it only had macro recording and playing
possibilities. I really cannot imagine anyone who is working with
photos more or less 'seriously' that could do it without proper macro
features.

Without doubt, The gimp is in functionality much closer to photofiltre.

But some, like me, just can't get used to the Gimp interface, even it it is
photoshopified...

Markku ....

An alternative to macro features might be scripting
via an available Gimp/Python interface ....

The gimp-python package includes the Python modules
necessary to write Python-based plugins for The GIMP.

It includes several plugins with various useful features.

This package is available for Linux, and since Python
is a cross-platform language, I would guess that it's
also available for the Windows Gimp version, but don't
know for sure ....

I've installed it under Debian Linux,
but haven't gotten around to trying it yet ....

I use GIMPshop. Photofiltre doesn't do layers AFAIK.

Photofiltre does in the shareware version, but that's off topic here,

But what does amaze me: you got GIMPshop to work?
I tried to install it, only to discover it had the same familiair (or rather
unfamiliar) interface as the normal gimp. Very strange though: I installed
it freshly on a newly installed computer. Maybe I overlooked something?

Jeroen, what do you mean by shareware version of Photofiltre? I'm not
aware of any.

Yes it is a bit strange. At the Photofiltre web page they have:
<http://www.photofiltre.com/>

**/
<s>Registration</s>

PhotoFiltre is free for a private, non commercial or educational use
(including non-profit organizations). In this case, registration is
not necessary.
<s>Commercial or professional use requires a registration.</s>

The commercial and professional uses are not authorized!
/**

and on their "News" page:

The commercial and professional uses of PhotoFiltre are not

(except for users with registration key)

Franglish?

I don't reply to trolls. No adware, cdware, commercial software,

Photofiltre has been split-up in 2 versions:

the (know and translated by you) freeware version called simply Photofiltre
or Photofiltre 6.0
This version fremains free for non-commercial purposes.
Though any bug fixes or minor additions will be implemented, mayor
additions, such as layers, will not make this version.

The other version is Photofiltre Studio (or Photofiltre 7 as work title). A
compleete look-alike , but fully rewritten big brother of Photofiltre.
It supports layes, additions and substractions of slecections, 8bf
(photoshop) plugin support, and some other features.
Because of various reasons, Antonio has decided to make this version
shareware.

As for the strange licence conditions found on the website
It is a bit of speculation, but I think it is not far off
- At first you had to register Photofiltre (the 6.0 version) for commercial
use. I and some others did. However, since the author does not have a
company or VAT number, the total sum of income he could make from it, was
very limited. Therefor he had to stop selling licences. But but he could, of
course, not deny commercial exploitations to those who already paid for his
program. That is the what the somewhat strange

is about

Photofiltre 7 can now be purchased (using paypal or a personal check) but
only for those who don't want tax returns, since he is still working on
obtaining his VAT number and business licence (remind me to never start a
business in France)

Photofiltre Studio: http://www.photofiltre-studio.com (french only, but
english support available in the forums)
or those who prefer dutch (for both versions) can go to my site:

From the download page (Téléchargement) at that site:

"PhotoFiltre Studio is a software distributed under free test
(shareware) limited to 30 days of evaluation. At the end of this
period, and if this software corresponds to your waiting, you will
have the moral obligation to discharge to you price of the licence (25
euros) near the author and this in order to obtain a personal
key of unlocking of the software. So on the other hand it does not
correspond to your waiting, you must remove it!"

Well, at least there's 6.0. I have commercial software that will do
layers, but personally I've never found a use for them.
