GIFs and BMPs problems

Sorry if this is the wrong newsgroup, I wasn't sure where to post this.
I am trying to download and save some animated pictures to my hard drive. The
images are from legitimate sites especially made for this reason. I am
having problems saving them as GIF images. Mostly I can only save them as
BMP files. Then the animations don't work. When I right click on the image
on the website and go into properties, it says GIF image, (although this
info can change to Paintshop pro image or BMP image if I refresh the web
page) So I think the problem must be my end. Is there something I can do to
save these images so that I can use them as they are intended -animated
gifs. Some do save but they save as paintshop pro images which enable me to
see the animation. But as I intend putting them on my website I am not sure
that they will be available for others to see.
Sometimes I get an error message box up when trying to save it, which reads
" The system cannot find the file specified" Then it will change from being
saved as an GIF image to an untitled BMP file.I have noticed that some JPGs
that I have saved on my pc show as ulead photo express files, and other BMPs
save as or will open in Paint shop pro. I am not sure why they wont all open
with the same program. I cant seem to set the preferences or the file
association without causing files to not be available to open. Something
must be corrupt I think. So I really need a fix not a work around.
Can someone please offer me some help?
If not can you please suggest the correct newsgroup.
Many thanks in advance

Not sure if this will cure your problem but I know if your temp internet
files area is excessive then windows will only save as BMP. Try going to
internet options and select delete temp internet files.

Thanks for your reply,
I have already done that, but it hasnt made any difference.
Any other ideas?
Thanks again.

Just another thought have you looked at the temp internet folder in windows
explorer to make sure that the files are really being deleted.
Neil

Yes I have double checked that, and it is all empty.
Still have problems.
Thanks for your reply

Hmm, I dont know why but after double checking the temp internet folder
and emptying, then rebooting it now works. Thank you for your help.
I still have a problem with file association though.
