GIF in email signature - becomes red x after a while

Hello,

Using XP 2002 - SP3. For about a year now, every time I insert my signature
in an email, the gif becomes a red x after a while, and I cannot revert it.

What is this happening? Does it have to do with SP3? Also, I don't have
the option of opening gif anymore. The security settings are fine. The mail
format is also set to HTML.

What else should I do?
