If Windows XP is all you have... You can't. Are you trying to do animation? You can
create single gif images in MS Paint.

How do I create a multi frame GIF image on XP?

====================================
WinXP does not have an option for
creating animated .gif files.

If you have any version of MS Picture It! /
MS Digital Image...try the "Flipbook" option.

Free MS GIF Animator:
http://www.freewareweb.com/cgi-bin/archive.cgi?ID=288

Searching on Google for gif animator
gets lots of hits.

If you happen to mean Multipage .tif...
try IrfanView:

Download IrfanView 3.97
http://www.tucows.com/preview/194967.html
(get the plug-ins too)

Hi Mary.

I have several ways of creating single frame GIF files, but was after a
mechanism to produce the animated effects of the multi frame GIF. Sounds
like a third party apps is what I need.

Thanks Steve

Hi John, thanks for the ideas.

I do have "MS Picture It! Express 9" but I am unable to find any help on the
"Flipbook" option.

You're welcome, the MS Gif Animator should
be useful to you.

Flipbook may not be available in the very limited
express version. In my version of DIP9 it's found
at: Tools / Flipbook.
