ghost messages

i have XP home sp2, i use outlook 2003. when i open outlook send/recieve says
it is sending 1 of 2 messages, there are no messages to send, nothing in the
outbox and no messages ready to send, this is now a constant problem. how can
i find these 'ghost' messages and delete them?

thanks for the response, unfortunately this doesn't help, you see there are
no messages in the outbox for me to get rid of, it is empty, yet,
send/recieve still says it is trying to send 1 of 2 messages. thanks and kind
regards.
