Ghost in the Machine - 1

Al least a couple of times a day I hear the removal & connect of hardware
sounds from my PC. Just like I unplugged a USB/1394 device and plugged it
right back. The only pluggable hardware I use are a HP USB printer and a
Verizon BroadbandAccess Wireless Internet modem. Both are always plugged in
and both check out fine - and I found they work right through such a
removal - connect sequence! So something else is being "removed and
reconnected"!

I do have several USB2 hard-drives for back-up purposes but they are plugged
in only when required a couple of times or so a week.

Event Viewer revealed nothing. This does not disturb functionality of this
PC in any way.

Just darned weird. I checked for Hidden Devices in Device Manager and none
were found.

Any insight welcome - I just wanted to find a way to solve the mystery!
Might be a good weekend project.

Any chance this was a previously owned PC from that old house up the street
with the creaky door.......;-)

Check your startup folder and the registry (use start > run > type in
msconfig and then check for any entries that look like they could be for
automatic updates. May want to install and run a program like Ad-Aware
Personal http://www.lavasoft.de/ or other anti-spyware program.

Another posibilty is that Power Management is allowing it to shut down after
a certain time of inactivity.
I have mine set to that setting and I hear the same audible signal.

Thanks very much for your response. You hit the nail right on the head!

I checked all Power management settings in Device Manager and found that the
"Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" setting checked
for all USB Root Hubs as well as the onboard LAN Adapter (not used).

I unchecked them all and the sounds disappeared.

You are brilliant! Regards and thanks again!

Hi Safe!
A simple trick I use, if you set different sound effects for different
Windows events, you can tell what's happening, provided you remember th
sounds you set, of course. ( the settings are in "Sounds and Audi
devices")
Print them out if you like.
