Hi,

I have an old Compaq Presario running XP SP2 and two Dell Laptops also
running XP SP2.

I'm trying to establish an at home network and I have failed miserably while
running the network setup wizard. All computers are able to access the
internet because I have a linksys Wireless-G Cable Gateway model WCG 200,
that's a cable modem and router in one. My laptops connect to it wirelessly
and my computer is connected via USB cable. I want to be able to share
programs between all the computers. The problem is that I can not set up the
network because I do not have the usb storage device and I apparently am not
smart enough to set up the network manually. What should I do? I'll check
back for a post, or you can e-mail me at (e-mail address removed)

You don't need a USB storage device to set up a network. Simply
running the Network Setup Wizard (in Start | All Programs |
Accessories | Communications) on each computer is enough.

What did you say when the Network Setup Wizard asked you to select a
connection method? The right answer with your modem/router is "This
computer connects to the Internet through a residential gateway or
through another computer on my network". Other answers might block
file and printer sharing.

If it asks, tell the Wizard to turn on file and printer sharing.

If there's a firewall program (Norton, McAfee, PC-cillin, ZoneAlarm,
etc) installed, configure it to allow file and printer sharing on the
local area network. Note that some antivirus programs (Norton,
PC-cillin) have firewall functions built in.

In general, it isn't possible to share programs between computers.
Most programs have to be installed on a computer in order to run on
that computer. The installation process copies support files to the
computer and creates configuration options in the Windows registry
database.

You don't need to run the wizard. First check your firewalls and make sure
they are not blocking file and printer sharing. If that doesn't solve the
problem, go here:
