Yes, you can just buy a license but it's not much cheaper than buying
the software, around $100 on Ebay for an OEM edition.

Hi,

You can purchase Microsoft Windows XP Pro from any local computer store in
your area.

How do you know for certain it is a pirated copy?
I only ask because Microsoft said I had a pirated version
as well. I was unable to activate or reactive my XP over
the Internet. I had been out of the country for several
months and it insisted I reactive upon my return.
My product was not illegal and I knew that. I ultimately
found out that someone had tried to re-register the system
using an "administrative key," while I was gone and that
is what caused the trouble. The guy from Microsoft, with
a very distinct east Indian accent told me I had to go
where I had bought the XP program. When I kept insisting
something else was wrong he just kept repeating himself.
Can you imagine my taking this disk and the part of the
box with the key on it to Fred Meyers, 2 years later?

Just make sure it is pirated before you jump. Microsoft
and outsourced contractors may not know and might advise
you that it is when it really isn't.

Yes. By purchasing the Windows XP disk. Before installing it, you should
remove the pirated version. If it was me, I would do a clean install (remove
all partitions on that hard drive, create a new partition, format the hard
drive, then install the legal copy of XP).

By the way, a "CPU" is the Central Processing Unit" that mounts on the
motherboard. It is the "brains" of the computer, but it is NOT the computer
itself. A computer is the whole works: the CPU, motherboard, memory, hard
drive, CD-ROM drive, case, etc..

So calling a computer a "CPU" is like calling a car an "engine".

Greetings --

If you are trying to install Service Pack 1a and getting the
following:

The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid

You need to purchase and use a _legitimate_ full retail copy of
WinXP Pro to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CD and Product Key.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP

Remember, you should also report whomever sold you the pirated
software to the pertinent law enforcement agencies; you've been
defrauded.
