getting a message microsoft word needs converter to display this

i tried to take ownership of a word file and suddenly i get the message that
word needs a converter to display the file correctly.please help!!!

We don't have enough information to try to guide you to a solution

1. Which version of Word do you have?

2. What is the EXACT message you're getting?

3. In which version of Word (number and language) was the file created?

Note: based on what you tell us, my first guess would be that the file has been
damaged. What you can do about that depends on the version of Word you have...
