Getting A Black Circle With Line Thru It When Page Loads And I Cant Edit

I just installed Frontpage 2003. When I go to work on
sites I have already worked on and that have been up on
the www, as soon as I open a page in FP, I cannot change
anything. My cursor gives me a black circle witha line
thru it. If I go into code view, I see background all in
yellow. Can someone tell me what to do. I have alot of
maintenance to perform on sites and cant do it.

Thanks

That sounds like the page you are looking at has a Dynamic Web Template
applied to it.

Although I'm not sure why it would without you knowing it.

Move the mouse around the entire page, everywhere, does the mouse change
ever? In other words, are they any sections of the page that you can edit?

Second, look at the top of the file in code view. There should be a line
that says what DWT is attached to this file. See if your web site has that
file in it and open that and make changes there.

Hope that helps.

I purchased a web template from the template store for
this web site. On one of the pages within this site ...
had the same thing ... this black circle ... with line
thru it .. and after hours of looking i clicked on
something that disabled it .. and for the life of me .. i
cant remember where it was .. does anyone know what it
could be? It was something that was checked and I
unchecked it.

Hello: Try this advice from one of the MVPs, Jim Buyens. It worked for me as
I had the same problem.

Try this:

o In Windows Explorer, find and delete all FP Temp Files.
By default, these reside in
C:\Documents and Settings\username\
Local Settings\Temp\FrontPageTempDir.
o In Windows Explorer, find and delete all hidden *.web
files .
o In Windows Explorer, find and delete the cmdui.prf
file.

If that doesn't solve the problem, please post again to
this thread and include:

o The size of your Web site, in total bytes and number
of files.
o The type and speed of your network connection.

The template you purchased appears to be using Dynamic Web Templates (.dwt)
The only areas editable on .htm pages that have a .dwt applied are the editable regions defined by the .dwt template
To see if a .dwt is applied to your pages use View Reports Shared Content Dynamic Web Templates (it will list the .dwt applied to
your pages)
Double clicking a page in that report will open it at an editable region
To modify the editable regions you need to reopen the actual .dwt and then reapply it to your pages
To remove the .dwt from an open page use Format Dynamic Web Template - Detach
