Get rid of DOS prompt for multiple OS's

L

Laurel

I and my son have the same problem, but different contexts. That is, we
have PCs that have new OS's installed, but we want to get rid of the DOS
scrren prompt you get at boot time askng which OS you want to use.

First situation:
XP is installed in two different partitions (XP home, the old one is on
the C partition, and XP Pro is on the D partion). XP home is obsolete.
BUT, there are lots of good data files on the C: drive (partition). So we
don' want to just format C:. I'm afraid I'll screw up everything if I just
try to delete c:\Windows.... Can anyone advise me of how to disable the XP
home on C just enough so that we're not prompted to choose an OS at boot
time?

Second situation:
XP was installed on a PC, but it was so flakey that my son decided to
re-install Windows 2000. I'm not sure exactly what he did. There are no
partitions, and if he choose the "obsolete" XP, it doesn't run (not sure
what the message is, but that's good. He doesn't want it anymore). Again,
any ideas about how to get rid of the prompt to choose an OS?

Right click on My Computer and choose properties and got to the Advanced
tab. Change the Default operating system to "Microsoft Windows XP
Professional . . . . "

Then set the "Time to display list of operating system:" to Zero

Edit boot.ini and stop using the term "DOS" in a context that has nothing to
do with DOS.

And yet you understood what she meant! Maybe it's time to get a little
sleep! ;-)

Thanks (again) for coming to my rescue. I say "again" because I'm really
"Laurel" that started the whole licensing brou-ha-ha. I wondered where my
posting went. Finally found it under the name "Sleepless in Seattle...."
Very strange.

You didn't start anything, Laurel. Your thread is just the latest
battleground of the EULA wars, that has lasted longer than most shooting
wars.

As for not seeing your posts, the default setting for post downloads in
Outlook Express is set to 300 posts at a time. Just take the check out
where it says “Get ### headers at a time” under Tools > Options > Read
tab. This way you can download all the posts for this newsgroup.

And just in case you haven't seen my reply to help you out with booting
directly to the Windows installation you are using:

Right click on My Computer and choose properties and got to the Advanced
tab. Then go to the Settings button under the Startup and Recovery
section of that tab. Change the Default operating system to "Microsoft
Windows XP Professional . . . . " Then set the "Time to display list of
operating system:" to 0.

Thanks for the specific info - hadn't yet seen it.
But the reason I couldn't find it was because it is under the name
"Sleepless in Seattle." As if "Sleepless" posted it instead of me. Does it
look that way to you?

No. I see your Original Post as the top post, and it is from Laurel.
The subject is "Get rid of DOS prompt for multiple OS's."

Sleepless's post is the second reply to your thread, and my original
reply is the first.

Michael Stevens is the third direct reply to your Original Post, or OP
for short.

All three reply's have the subject "Re: Get rid of DOS prompt for
multiple OS's."

Here is a screenshot of what I see, if you don't understand my
description.

I did that. Your page of FAQs came up okay, but nothing happened
when I clicked on number 19 (or a couple of the others I tried).

You either have scripting disabled in some fashion, or you don't have a
java virtual machine installed on your computer.

That isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Well, that's weird. Somehow on my machine (uploaded posts), Sleepless is up
at the top of the tree, and my original message is nowhere to be found.
Thanks for clarifying the situation.

You either have scripting disabled in some fashion,

Yes, I do have Javascript disabled for security.

The irony is it's actually easier to write a Web page that doesn't
equire Javascript than one that does. I never ceas to be amazed at
the effort spent by people to make their pages harder to view!
