get a count of total contacts & count in a category?

Post a question in detail if you really have one. Do not use the Subject for
that purpose.
 
To see the number of contacts in a category in only one folder simply switch
to the view by category.

If you want to see that for more than one folder you can use Category
Manager (see the link in my signature), which can display all contacts from
all folders grouped by categories.
