Well, if you don't have a "genuine" (a.k.a. legitimate) WinXP license,
you're not meant to get any updates until you install a legitimate copy
of the OS.

So, the first thing you need to do is determine whether or not you
actually have a non-genuine (pirated) copy of WinXP installed. Did
your cousin provide you with an original (factory-pressed) installation
CD, the Product Key, the Certificate of Authenticity, and all of the
remaining documentation that goes with a valid license?

If not, ask him/her for these items. If your cousin cannot or will not
furnish these to you, than you almost certainly have pirated software
installed. You'll need to purchase your own legitimate license for
WinXP and install it.

If you have all of these items, you may well have a legitimate license,
but the WGA process (which is far from perfect) is providing a false
alarm. Start here:

Hi Jonno,

Your cousin install a version of Windows XP, that was hacked. Save
yourself some time and go out and buy a Windows XP Home or Professional
Edition Update CD with Service Pack 2 and install it. Note, with an Upgrade
CD, you need to already own a previous copy of Windows operating system on a
CD. If you don't then you need to buy the Full Version of Windows XP,
instead.

Or you can wait until Windows Vista comes out on January 30, 2007 and
buy the full version from the store and get lots of other software for free
after rebates, plus tax of course.

In order to resolve your non-genuine licensing issue, please visit:
www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on "Validate Windows".
When validation fails, you'll see a button to click on which will
provide information on your options which include how to acquire
a WGA Kit.
