MS saying my XP is not Genuine

S

Sarah

Why is Microsoft now insisting that my copy of XP is not genuine? It has
been verified as Genuine since April with Genuine Advantage first came out.
I went to their verification website from clicking through the blue star
that pops up in the systray. The page said it was genuine but when I
rebooted there were graphics saying I do not have genuine Microsoft and I
was to update to the genuine. What is going on? Mine IS genuine with the
holograms and is SP2 edition. I bought it from a tech store when they
updated to XP.

You think I would get a human? I quit calling Microsoft when it took a
whole day to get a non answer. I posted a question to their Genuine
Advantage Forum.

Sarah.

Yes, it's quite possible you will get a human. They are aware that there
will be false positives, and that they may need to take orders for new
licenses. Similarly, calling the Activation phone numbers gets you a live
human. These aren't support lines and you should not have to wait very
long or pay a toll.

Incidentally it's also possible that you have a legit copy, but also that if
someone else installed it, the wrong key was used. You should verify that
the key used matches the key on the COA sticker on your PC case. There
are a number of tools that will display the key *and* let you change it to
match the key on the COA. After you've changed it to match the COA,
re-validate. These include the Magical Jellybean Tool and some WGA tools.

If the COA and the key do match, you should phone.

"First, please verify if your COA sticker or product key
(http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx) matches your
Product Key being used on your system? You can view your product key with
the Genuine Advantage diagnostics tool (at least the last 15 digits) located
here: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 .

www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/pkuinstructions.aspx is the link for the
tool. Good luck!

Good luck!

With almost all OEM installs from large OEM's like Dell, HP, eMachines,
Gateway, etc. the key on the COA will not match the factory installed key.
The factory images use a preactivated key. If you use the factory restore
procedure it will again use the factory preactivated key. The only time the
key from the COA would match the installed key on most OEM computers is if
someone had re-installed Windows without using the factory restore option.
Using a tool to change the key to match the COA will force an activation.
The activation will always fail on the Internet and the user will have to
call Microsoft to activate.

I found some validation information on the board under the "sticky" notes.
And an MVP posted to go here
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/default.mspx?displaylang=en Then put this
command "WGAtray.exe /b" [without the ""] in Windows run. Online always
did validate. But Windows kept bugging me. Hope this ends this MS debacle.
You better believe I am making a note of how to do this.
