Generic Host Process Error

Please help. My desktop Sony computer operating system is Microsoft
Windows XP HE Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600. A few days ago I
started to get the following error message while I was on-line using my dial
up modem. "Generic Host Process Error" sorry must shut down. Shortly after
I receive this message the on-line capability - whether it be with using
Outlook Express or my mail utility "Incredimail" - goes away. This is to
say that it locks up. The only way that I can get it to come back is to
shut down Windows and restart. Then all will work for a short time
sometimes and for times up to 45 minutes before I get the"Generic Host
Process Error "
When Service Pack 2 became available, I heard many bad things about it
and did not upgrade to it. Today I downloaded a file from Microsoft that
was to fix the "Generic Host error": "WindowsXP-KB894391-X86-ENV.exe. It
succesfully installed however I still have the same problem.
Thanks in Advance
Cappy

Hello,
There may be a worm. Do you have a firewall? If not, why not? Maybe is a
good ideea to install SP2...
Anyway, we need more info. Check the event log. Open Control Panel, go to
Administrative Tools, open Event Viewer, look for errors that correspond to
when the event happened, double click the error, the information inside may
give a clue as to the source of the issue.

Yes, but now you have updates that may be dependent on SP2.

It is your choice not to upgrade to SP2 ... but with SP1 gone as a download
.... updates coming from MS is dependent on SP2 to operate.

If you chose not to install SP2 ... don't be surprised that the system acts
inconsistent ... especially since you are still updating from MS.

As far as Generic Host Process, what errors are in the Event Viewer Log
pertaining to this error?

Run: eventvwr.msc

and look thru the logs.

Try this: Go to control panel - administrative tools - services.
double click on each service - click on the log on tab - click on local
system account - put a check in the box for, "allow service to interact with
the desktop. Do this for each service. Restart the computer. go to dial-up
and connect.

Thanks to those that responded,
Believe it or not the problem has gone away, however I'm sure it will be
back. Thanks for educating me. I do have a firewall installed. I did check
the event log and if the problem occurs again I will go there first to try
to determine the problem. And also to provide better information if I again
ask assistance of this user group.
FYI: I do not believe that I have a worm. I will, if the problem comes
again, consider upgrading to Windows Service Pack 2. It makes good sense to
me that the upcoming fixes that Microsoft builds will not work on Service
Pack 1. I wish Microsoft would get their act together. When I bought my
laptop several years ago, I had to do about 30 upgrades to it. Wow. Thanks
again and keep up the good work within this users group.

If you have a DSL/Cable Modem/Broadband, it's a lot easy to download and
save to CD.

Else, order the CD from MS site ... it's free.
