Generating a table or a list

I have a document where I am retyping a lot of the information to create a
table up front. This is in addition to the Table of Contents. I looked over
the generation of a list of figures and it's not what I need. Does anyone
know of a way to do this?
 
To get Word to generate a table or list for you, the text has to be marked
or flagged in some way, so that Word knows which text to pull.

There are many ways to mark the text, but which is best would depend on what
type of information you find yourself re-typing, and on what role in plays
in the document, and what the table is supposed to be doing.

You might read the "Field codes: TOC (Table of Contents) field" topic in
Help--that lists a number of ways.
 
I have always wondered whether I could generate a table of contents using
other than headings. Now I see how it's done. Thanks. I'm not sure this will
solve my problem since the table I want to generate is more like what I'd
create with a mail merge/directory. But I want to use the data in the word
document rather than data from a database.
