Hi.

I use FP 2003 for the creation, maintenance, and updating of a personal
"family" website. (I also use the MS Digital Image program for image
editing.)

The website came out of a need for easier sharing of news and pictures with
our faraway family and friends. Emailing pictures to everyone was a
nightmare considering the issues of recipients' varying bandwidth and ISPs,
not to mention my desire for pictures to be seen at the largest possible
size! :) You get the idea.

I would love some feedback and/or advice in the general area of "what works
and what doesn't" and while I don't mind visitors to the site, I'd rather
not post the address here and risk attracting troublemakers. You can,
however, figure it out from my email address...thanks for any info you can
provide.

Hi Michelle,

A couple of programs you may wish to consider:

Ulead PhotoImpact is an excellent program for digital imaging along with
general graphics for under $100.00 For a family/hobbyist type of a web
site..it is a good program. It also does an excellent job in optimizing
photos for the web. You can see more about that here:

If you want to create some photo albums..here's another good choice..and
free:

I keep hearing/seeing/reading that Adobe is the thing to get for image
editing, though. Did you not recommend it on quality or price? While I
like the Microsoft DI Suite, I'm probably not going to spend more money on
an equivalent program without drastic improvement over what I already have.
Is Ulead significantly better at editing than MS or Adobe?

Thanks for the album link...I'm looking into it!

Basically you can use any graphics or image application that you are comfortable with using and the
quality of it output, since general you only need to save images at 72 DPI setting, which is best
suited for the internet.

if you're going to make webs for a living I'd go with adobe up front. I'd
still have ulead's photoimpact and smart saver 3 pro for other jobs.
the thing is, if you learn photoimpact first it'll be harder to learn
photoshop.
If you learn photoshop first, using photoimpact for the jobs it's best
suited really requires no learning at all. ;-)

Hi Michelle,

I recommended Ulead based on both quality and price. Photoshop is arguably
the best there is..but it comes with a big price tag and also a fairly big
learning curve. For many people it is more than they need.

I have not used the MS program you have..so I don't really have a basis of
comparison.

In general, Adobe tends to be more expensive and less user friendly when
it comes to their higher end products.

If you are looking for image editing, Adobe Photoshop Elements is, in my
opinion, much better than Ulead, and is less expensive. It can do all
Ulead does and more.

You could also get Adobe Photoshop Album to get basic image editing and
a photo album. You can also create slide shows as well as other cool
effects such as VCDs.

You can get both together for about $100 at Costco, or for about $130 in
BestBuy.

I use them both, and could not be happier.

You can buy Photo Elements 2.0 at WalMarts for 58.62$ - excellent deal !
