The progression of ranks of general officers in the US military:
Rank: Badge
Brigadier General *
Major General **
Lieutenant General ***
General ****
General of the Armies *****
Within a rank, seniority is determined by the date of ascension to that
rank. For those of the same date of rank I believe it's determined by order
in the promotion list.
