Phone your ISP and ask them for assistance in configuring the
newsgroups.

Good luck

Many ISPs are quietly discontinuing Usenet support (this is what gives you
the newsgroups) for legal reasons (for example, child porn). They will
often say that it's because blogs and web forums are more popular.

If your ISP has discontinued Usenet support and you want it, you must use
any of many other news servers. They won't hook the servers back up for
you. If they haven't shut them down, get the proper settings from them and
refresh the groups list.

Try this as the news server name: "news.cable.ntlworld.com"

There are a lot of free servers - though with those you often can't post.
If you need to post, you'll usually have to pay a small monthly fee, often
under US$8/month. The more data you want to be able to transfer, the more
you will have to pay.

You can also find most non-binary groups via Google Groups, and you can post
to those if you make an account. You just have to use the web interface.

Google "free news servers" and "news servers" and you'll get many names. Do
a little shopping and you'll get a reasonable deal and reasonable
performance.

Around here, there is a battle for broadband Internet between
the cable company, Comcast, and the phone company, Verizon. They
are mainly competing on features rather than price but, if
Comcast removes its news server, Verizon may get a new customer.
However, Comcast also provides a free subscription to McAffee
anti-virus and that's useful.
