GeForce FX 5500

I found a returned/open item PNY GeForce FX 5500 at Fry's for $79.95.
They didn't have too many midrange graphics cards available so I
thought that I would give this one a try. I was wondering if it was a
good purchase, or if I should have gotten something else for my Athlon
3200+ game/dvd system. I didn't want to spend a lot of money and it
seemed like a good deal.

opened and returned items are a 50 50 chance of getting an undamaged
product. AFA the price and brand you could do worse

Yeah, I figured for $79.95 it wasn't that bad of a deal. I'll keep an
eye on it though, if it gives me any problems I'll return it.

As long as you do not plan on playing any modern graphically challenging
games (like Doom 3, HL2, etc.) it should work fine. But it is a slowww
card.

I don't know. I can play Far Cry on my 5200 at 1024x768 just fine. You
just have to turn off some of the features like shading. In fact Far
Cry ran pretty well on my old MX400.

Doom 3 will also run on the 5500, but again you'll have to turn down the
res and run with few visual extras.

That's pretty much retail. you didn't get any discount:
http://www.newegg.com/app/SearchProductResult.asp?Submit=Go&DEPA=0

AND it's a crap card.

Why did you waste our time here before asking about video cards if you
were going to completely ignore everything we said and go buy a crap
card that may or may not function for more than a week at the price the
card costs NEW???

The price is lower than retail.

Note that copying and pasting a link does not always work. You have to
examine the link text, like to see if an identifying number is included.

A $3 difference is not low enough to be considered below retail when
you're talking about an $80 card.

I see what you mean re: the newegg url I posted. Brand new cards based
on this chipset start at $10 less than the OP paid on newegg.com, and
they are not the cheapest.

With all of the negative commentary I am going to return the card and
get a 5700 online for $128 bucks or so.

Yeah, but getting into this I didn't want to spend a whole lot of
money. The price of my inexpensive upgrade keeps going up ;-)

His max budget was $150 before, IIRC. I think all 5900XT cards are going
to be over that. My recommendations before were 5900XT, and if that was
too pricey then Ati 9600XT or 5700Ultra (just about $150 for the Leadtek
5700Ultra at newegg.com...I like leadtek). you get better bang for your
buck with Ati, but IMO the drivers are immature and I've had some issues
with them (I use a 9600XT based card on my windows box right now). Just
remember, Jason, that the cards based on the 5700 are different than
those based on the 5700Ultra.
