Most of the time on boot-up( XP plus SP2 and updated frequently) I get
told that gearsec did not install. I've tried reporting it and get
the "download from here and install" message, which I've done loads of
times but it doesn't seem to work. I can't find which programs are
affected by not having this element.
Can anyone help, please?

The module/program "Gearsec" is a optical disk recording application.

However, any type of message relating to a file could also be some kind
of Malware trying to mimic a known application.
Have you checked your Add/Remove applet in Control Panel. I'd look
through the list and see if you have any Gearsec entries.

It's likely the program is setup to start a service at boot and it's unable
to
load or install. A program called AutoRuns from SysInternals may help
to find where the call for Gearsec is coming from.

Any CD/DVD burning programs installed? Some use gearsec including some
versions of Roxio's offerings.

Yes, I have Nero 5.5.10.54 It may be a couple of years old but as it
does all I want it to do, I've never updated it (to say nothing of the
money).

I can't say if gearsec is loaded by Nero. It is with some of the Roxio
media products.
