Gateway M505 - Video problem after Cat 7.1 (or 7.2) update w/Vista

Repro steps:

Grab a Gateway M505 notebook with built-in Radeon Mobility 9600

Install Vista 32 bit Business Enterprise Edition

Note it works perfectly with Microsoft's WDM driver for R9600

Upgrade with ATI Vista Catalyst 7.1 or 7.2

Pick all default components for installation

Reboot

Note that internal video no longer works - the blue Vista "circle" is
shown at first bootup, and from then on, no video is shown on the LCD
screen attached to the notebook. Plugging in an external VGA monitor
to the VGA-out port works fine, but isn't an acceptable solution.

So far I've just used "Last Known Good" and reverted to the Windows
built-in WDM driver for the 9600.

Has anyone else seen this?

If Gateway has drivers, use them. Notebooks are highly specific to the
manufacturer.

Yes, obviously, that's the first place one would look. However,
Gateway wants to sell me a new Gateway laptop with Vista
pre-installed, and doesn't want to support putting Vista on this older
laptop. The latest driver they have is from 2003 and is an XP driver.

Notebooks are highly specific to the manufacturer, but the individual
parts are not. I've got to believe someone else has seen this problem
with the ATI Mobility Radeon 9600. Anyone?

Basic problem: No video from built-in LCD screen on notebook - only
video from external VGA port. Switching output via the notebook's
keyboard (from LCD screen to external VGA output) does nothing.

Is there a System Restore Point you can try?

Hi Cari.

This is a driver issue. How will a SRP help?

Basic issue, again:

1. Install Vista. WDM drivers in Vista work OK, but don't have
optimized OpenGL.
2. Install Cat 7.1 or Cat 7.2 drivers. Note that the LCD panel in the
laptop no longer works - only "external" VGA from the VGA port on the
laptop.
3. Use Last Known Good to go back to WDM drivers. Video now works,
but we're back to WDM drivers.

Anyone have any ideas?

I would say its more of a vista problem, I just moved up to 7.2 for my
x1650XT and have had no problems at all, but read of others with lots of
problems all running vista. I have yet to see a reason to run it.

Given the stock WDM drivers (from Microsoft - the in-box Vista Radeon
drivers) work fine, it's tough for me to blame Microsoft. I think
it's more appropriate to blame ATI for a driver that doesn't work
correctly on some of their vendors' hardware - in this case, the
Gateway M505X with Radeon Mobility 9600 graphics.

So far I'm just using the built-in WDM drivers. They work, but I'd
prefer to use ATI's, and per the info on their web pages, this
*should* work.

I'm not happy with ATI and Gateway right now. :(
