Garmin GPS - Problem with the "COM1" serial port

I am trying to update the database on my Garmin StreetPilot III GPS. When I run the program, I keep getting the error message: There is a problem with the "COM1" serial port. Access is denied." Garmin advises that the most common problem occurs with PDA synchronization programs such as Hotsync and I have exited that program as suggested, but the problem still occurs.

Using the Auto Detect Port feature of the Garmin programs indicates "Unable to find a GARMIN device.

Can someone point me to a fix for this problem?

I am running Windows XP Professional Version 2002, Service Pack 1
