Game issues in Windows XP Pro

A

Andrew Black

I have come upon the following problem:
All my games tend to exit fullscreen mode and, when
possible, to run on in a window. alt+tab or alt+enter
puts them back in fullscreen, but after several
such "issues", the system just resets by itself, with no
event viewer entry at all, as if there was no problem.
Also, the sound is really jerky (after a fixed ammount of
seconds, it starts echoing and distorting, only to get
back to normal in 3-4 seconds, and afterwards start the
cycle all over).
I have Windows XP Professional, with almost all updates,
DirectX 9.0b, latest drivers for all (ATI Radeon 9000,
SoundBlaster Audigy, Leadtek TV2000XP).
What could be the problem?

Hi Andrew,

You could be suffering from popups that are stealing the focus
from the Direct 3D game back to the desktop. The trick is in
finding what that is, and eliminating it. For the sound issues,
update to the latest drivers for your sound card, and adjust the
hardware acceleration settings in DirectX (Start / Run / dxdiag),
and lower the sound settings inside the game, until you find the
exact settings that work best for your game and system. :)

1. To find that popup culprit: Temporarily disable Startup
programs one at a time, starting with Firewall, Antivirus, and ad
blockers using: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php

You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm

2. Run a virus scan at: http://housecall.antivirus.com Afterwards
Download & Run Spybot from: http://security.kolla.de to find any
Trojans, Adware, or Spyware which could clog up your system.

Good luck Andrew. Be patient and you'll have it fixed in no time. :)
