funny characters on every new email

OL 2003. When I create a new email message, funny/odd characters are
automatically inserted. It is the same character so I assume it's a
formatting issue perhaps?

You're using Word and those are the formatting marks. Toggle them off by
pressing Ctrl-Shift-8
