'Full Screen' Mode

Hi,

I hope that someone can help me with something that has been bugging me for
ages. Now I've found this forum I thought I'd ask.

I want a 'proper' full screen mode in Word 2007. I want to simply see what
I'm typing. I don't want any menus or scroll bars; in particular I don't want
to see the button to press to exit full screen mode. To be clear i'll repeat:
I want to see the page and the words and NOTHING else.

In my last version of Word I had a full screen mode and the stupid exit
button; you have no idea how much that made me swear. I thought Word 2007 may
have moved on but all I can seem to find is the full screen 'reading' view.
Calling it 'full screen' is literally incorrect: it is full of menus and
controls that hide parts of the screen and distract me.

Can someone help me find a true 'full screen' mode in 2007? Is such a thing
possible in any word processor? Do people that create word processors write
at all?

What you see is what you get. As a professional writer (now retired), I
personally like to have tools available to enable easy formatting of the
document and I am certainly nor distracted by the tiny menu in Word 2007's
reading view - though frankly I much prefer the Print Layout view for
working with documents.

I used to have the function you require. It was called a typewriter. Things
have moved on.

I should add that it is possible with Word 2003 to have a clear full screen
mode - but as 2007 does not have toolbars it is not possible to turn them
off.

Hi,

So you like the Print Layout View when 'working with documents;' so do I.
When I am working with a document (i.e. I have a document to work with) all
this stuff is great; indeed, that's why I paid the cash for the product
rather than use OpenOffice or whatever.

Thing is that sometimes, when I am writing and have no document to format
and consider printing yet, I want only to see that.

I am not alone. After posting the question I took a long look at the
internet and discovered that there are all sorts of alternate word processors
that make a point of offering what I want. There are even add-ons for 2007,
but the one I looked at was spoilt by the inclusion of a flashing line and
column indicator at the bottom of the screen.

Whilst looking at the internet I found a solution for Word 2007:
The old 2003 commands still work. If you press ALT+V and then press U...
ahhh, it all goes away (even the exit full screen has gone ). I was
concerned that I'd be left with the vertical scroll bar (the page with the
solution said I would be), but that has gone too. So it's all good I
have a 'typewriter' for when I want to write and 'Print Layout View' for when
I'm interested in printing, layout and the things you do after writing.

If any Word people read this I would like to request a 'Write View' be
included in the next Word along with all the other views useful for other
things: printing, reading, editing, formatting...playing with functions. Do
remember that there are some who use the product for writing. People are
paying money for what I want Microsoft.

As an alternative to accelerator keys, you can assign a keyboard shortcut to
the ToggleFull command, which turns Full Screen on or off. Use the Customize
Keyboard dialog box (Office button | Word Options, Customize category; click
the Customize button).

OK - that's a plus, I guess Interestingly the keyboard shortcut is
reported unassigned in the keyboard shortcut editor.

Whether you have a vertical scroll bar rather depends on the zoom level that
you view at and the resolution of the display driver.
Given that the old command still works, it should be possible to add a
ribbon button to achieve it. Create a macro as follows:

MsgBox "Press ESC to exit full screen", vbInformation, "Full Screen
View"
ActiveWindow.View.FullScreen = True

(the first line is optional) and see

FWIW this is not Microsoft but a user peer group.

Graham,

Alt, V, U is an accelerator key combination (from &View | F&ull Screen of
Word 2003, English language version) rather than a keyboard shortcut;
therefore, Alt+V+U is unassigned in the Customize Keyboard dialog box.

Hi,

Interestingly the vertical scroll bar is absent on my nice new full screen
mode however far I zoom in and regardless of the number of pages in the
document. This is most welcome as if it was there I'd be ranting on about
trying to make it go away )

Now all i need is a way to have the page auto scroll when my type gets to
about half to three quarters of the way down the screen: so i'm not always
typing at the screen bottom. Typing at the screen bottom can by a pain in any
view as I often see that part of the bottom line is missing. Any ideas guys?

Oh, one other thing: the insertion point cursor...any way to change it's
colour? Perhaps it would be nice if it only showed itself when i was moving
the insertion point too.

Hi,

Can someone help me with this if there's a way forward please.

I'm finding that on full screen, regardless of the font used, as the text
typed is at the bottom of the screen, the bottom of the line is missing as it
is cut off by the window. People I know localy have confirmed this (it is not
down to my PC). It seems to me that people must just put up with this and
they should not. I'm not happy with that as I have paid a lot for this
software and I expect/DEMAND to see my type as when I type it! What the hell
is going on? Why is half of my line missing at the bottom of the page? Why
can't i modify this so the type is higher on the screen? Even though my 3
months support is up I have owned this 'product' for less than half an year
and therefore expect (by law) for a solution or refund as Word is unfit for
purpose: a word processor must show you what you have typed.

It must be the case that 'fit for purpose' means I can see what I write. I'm
sure it must. Currently this product does not show me what I am typing fully.
I am just a little put out by this. Are Microsoft above the law in England?

I have spent a lot of years standing up to the MS bashers but I think now
they are correct. I want my money back and I want it now.

As I explained to you earlier this forum is not Microsoft, but a user peer
group (hosted on a Microsoft server). It is not monitored by nor serviced by
Microsoft personnel in any meaningful way.

What UK law says that Microsoft must adapt to your unusual way of working?
If you are not happy with the product, then take it up with Microsoft.
However, *demanding* that they make the program work as you require is not
going to get you anywhere at all.

There is a slider provided to move your text into view. It is your choice
not to use it.

Had you not left it for 6 months before complaining, you could have got a
refund. Now you will have to live with it.

Some months ago (last December, to be exact) Greg Maxey provided a macro
that will do what you want. > Assign the following macro to a keyboard
shortcut and modify the down value to suit your taste:

Sub MySmallScroll()
ActiveDocument.ActiveWindow.SmallScroll Down:=10
