Full Name vs. Display Name

I imported my contacts from Act to Outlook. Since Act has a salutation field
that Outlook does not, and autofill options for the salutation field in Act,
the majority of my contacts contain "Mr." or "Ms." or "Professor" to
facilitate the salutation completion process when loaded into Act.

The full name in most cases has been properly broken into its appropriate
parts (Title/prefix, first, last).
But the display name is using Mr. John Smith instead of just John Smith.
Now when addressing email, Mr. John Smith is sorted completely separately
from John Jones (whose contact does not have Mr.)
Now, typing John after clicking on the To button of my email doesn't bring
up John Smith. I have to backspace to erase text and then type Mr. John.
This is not such a solution because it may be Prof. or Professor or Mr. and
Mrs.

I have tried editing the "Display As" field and it gets overwritten back to
original.
I'm working with 2000 contacts. This is a pain. Any thoughts?

Try to clarify your post, please and provide some more detail. The terms you
are using are hard to follow because they don't make sense. Nor is it clear
whether you are talking about a mail merge to a document or email. Nor is it
clear to what view you are referring when you are talking about sorting.
The Display As field would have nothing to do with the former, only the
latter. It sounds like most of the problems you are having are with a mail
merge. Outlook uses Word for performing mail merge functions such as Form
Letters, mailing labels, envelopes, and fax or email merges. For an overview

Sorry. I will try to be more clear.
I am working with Outlook 2003.
I imported contacts from Act.

I mapped name prefix to name title, i.e. "Mr." of Mr. John Smith. Some
contacts did not have a "Mr." i.e. John Jones. Most contacts do have it
because it is proper etiquette and is required for formal letter salutations.

Now, I am addressing emails. I click on To. I see a list of contacts.
displayed. I type John. I can see John Jones. I cannot see John Smith and
wonder where he is. In fact he is alpha sorted under "Mr. John Smith"
because outlook created a Display As field of Mr. John Smith by default. It
has done this for all imported contacts which contained the "Mr. or Ms. or
Professor, etc."

I manually edit the Display As back to John Smith, and it defaults back to
Mr. John Smith.

If I add a new contact, Mr. Eric Ormsby, it creates Display As of "Eric
Ormsby" consistent with the optional settings.

Examine the "File As" fields for the Contacts in question. What do they
show?
State the sort order you have specified for the Outlook Address Book.

File As: Last, First
Outlook Address Book is set to "Show names by": First, Last
Both of these options perform correctly. The problem is that imported
contacts include the "Mr." in the "Display As" field. If I add a new contact
manually, the "Mr." does not get carried over to the "Display As" field.

None of those settings will apply to Contacts that are imported. They only
apply to new Contacts created within Outlook.
