Chris

I am having a problem with .exe file associations. If I
click to launche any .exe file it launches Microsoft
front page.

How do I change the association so that instead of
launching frontpage it runs the executable (.exe)?

Thanks in advance

Hi Chris,

The file association for .exe seems to be screwed up.

Click [Start] [Run] [Command]
Type the following and then press Enter after typing each one:

cd\windows
copy regedit.exe regedit.com
start regedit.com

Navigate to and select the following key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command

Double-click the (Default) value in the right pane.
Delete the current value data, and then type: "%1" %*
(ie., type the following characters:
quote-percent-one-quote-space-percent-asterisk.)

Exit the Registry Editor and restart Windows.

Solution 2:
Download .exe File association fix from MVP Doug's site:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

Ramesh,
Tried both methods...value set to "%1" %*
Restarted both times.

Still launching frontpage

Strange because when I view the file under explorer I am
trying to launch (for example ie6setup.exe) it displays
as that name...however when I double click the file it
then launches frontpage but is says
Open file as
ie6setup.exe.asp
This file contains binary data
then it asks me to check _HTML or _RTF or _Text

Why is it showing under frontpage as .exe.asp??

Anyway your suggestion did not fix...still launching
frontpage on any .exe I double click on.

Help!!

Right-click the file and see which option is default.

* Backup the registry.
* Delete the entire "exefile" entry
* Reapply the fix.

Hi Chris,

Copy exe_fix.reg from ftp://12.107.147.141/regfiles to your system and
double-click (run) it. Agree to the warning. It will reset the default
associations for .exe files.

Chris, after you have tried the fixes listed above, if they still do not
seem to fix the problem, do this:
In Explorer, go to Tools | Folder Options | View and make sure that "Hide
extensions for known file types" is unchecked.
Now go look at that file... It may be that it was saved with a .asp
extension which Explorer is hiding from you. If that is the case, I would
delete it then go back and download it again...

Hope this helps, and, as always, your mileage may vary,

I unchecked "hide extensions"....it indeed had .exe.asp.
I deleted file and redownloaded....now fine.

So why did .asp get appended to the .exe??
This happened on a few downloaded .exe files

By the way I did not apply the second two fixes
suggested...instead I checked extension deleted and
reloaded file first.

Also I just tried another file download and for some
reason it wanted to save the file with .asp appended
to .exe again...I simply removed the .asp from the file
name it wanted to save to before saving.

So I guess my issue now is why does it keep wanting to
attach .asp to downloaded .exe files??

PS...Thanks for help so far...you guys are the best!!!
