Using WS_FTP and Filezilla, FTP uplades of 'large' GIF and JPG files, upload
stops at 32768 bytes. Using FTP from the command line uploads files with no
problem.

I don't think that's it. The command-mode FTP client uses active mode,
that's the only thing it knows. And the command-mode client is working
correctly for OP.

That having been said, I can't think of anything that would stop an
FTP transfer in the middle.

My experience is that it didn't actually stop, the transfer rate just slowed
down to an excruciatingly slow trickle about a third of the way through
(something like a couple of seconds per byte). The setting the FTP client to
passive mode suggestion was made by Yahoo/Geocities, which hosts Kanyak's
Doghouse. After I did it, I no longer had any upload problems. I don't know
why it works and several people have said that it shouldn't; but it does.

This slowdown in FTP transfers just started recently by the way. I wasn't
having it at all, say, a month ago.
