ftp sites

Hi,
I know that this issue has been addressed many times, but the
solutions that I have found so far haven't worked.

I am running WinXP home with all updates, IE explorer
6.0.2900.2180.xp_sp2, with all updates.
As far as protection goes, I have ZoneAlarm 6.1.744.1 free version.
I also have the latest AdAware with adwatch installed.
I have the latest version of AVG free, Spyware Blaster and Spyware
guard installed.
I am running a D-Link Di-604 router, set at the default mode. I have
a ASDL internet connection.

The error message that I am getting when I try to access any ftp site
is: "FTP Folder Error" Windows cannot access this folder.Make sure
that you have typed the file name correctly and that you have
permission to access the folder. Details: A connection with the server
could not be established.

Any ideas as to where to start would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Does it do that with any FTP client?

Check that your username and password for the ftp site is valid.

Hi, and thanks for the prompt reply.

I've tried from IE and from the run command. I am not all that
familiar with how to use the ftp.exe program to see if this works.
Thanks again.

Hi Plato,

All of the sites that I have been to don't request a username or
password. Am I missing some setting in IE that I have to set?
The ftp site that I want to go to is: ftp.cs.columbia.edu

Thanks

Do you specifically want to use IE for ftp sites?

The Error Message is telling you IE cannot access the folder on the
ftp site, generally this is caused by Firewall issues. Try accessing
an ftp site with the firewall disabled, ensure the built in windows
firewall is off and not complicating the issue.

If it works re-enable your firewall and allow port 21.

The easiest way to access ftp is to use a proper ftp client like FTPX
http://www.ftpx.com/

Its very simple to use

I did have a major problem on a clients PC with all ftp clients on a
machine running a full 2005 NIS suite some time ago, both the AV and
the Firewall were blocking ftp, dunno about AGV maybe that needs to be
set to enable ftp sites, I have never used it.

I can't see why ftp should be a big problem its been around since
ARPANET pre-dating email for that matter, if the security is set up
right it should work.

Having said that I don't use IE for anything and have not used it for
years not even for windows updates, I use Firefox and I use an ftp
client for ftp downloads.

Hi, Jonah,

I d/l'd the ftp Explorer pgm and gave it a try without turning off my
firewall, and it works. I was able to access the ftp sites. Now, my
question is how do I access the ftp sites from IE. What settings do I
need to change?
Thanks

Don't even try/bother with it - use a dedicated FTP client like
cuteFTP - there's quite a few frrebies (search www.tucows.com and
www.download.com)

There is no point John, use an ftp client, if you get IE to work the
odds are it will get screwed up by some future "critical" update or
other.

One to try though is in Internet Options > Security > Custom Level >
look for the "Automatic Prompting for File Downloads" and ensure it is
set to enabled.

Might fix it, like I said I never touch IE.

To Steam3801 and Jonah,
Thanks for the advice.
I found the prg Smart FTP Client which works quite well and is
freeware. I have given up on IE for ftp's. Thanks!!
