FTP Problem

I seem to be having a problem with FTP. EVery time I try
to FTP down a file (any file from any FTP sight) my system
just hangs and I have to click on the STOP icon under
Internet Explorer. I downloaded WS FTP and it works fine
to download a file so I know it's not the sights but
something with my system. I'm running XP Pro and have
applied all of the latest upgrades. Any idea of what the
problem may be and how to correct it? Thx.

ie explorer > tools > internet options > advanced > use passive mode...
