ftp connection with command prompt

After typing ftp ftp-www.earthlink.net at the cmd prompt I get;
User <ftp-www.earthlink.net:<none>>:ftp myusername mypassword
ftp-www.earthlink.net
331 Password required for ftp.
Password: I type my pass here, hit enter and the shell closes. I'm using
windows xp home. All I want to do is navigate to my free earthlink website
and download from it to this pc using the command prompt. Anyone? thanks

You may have an Active Mode / Passive Mode problem. Windows' command
line FTP client is an Active Mode only client. Active mode won't work
if your FTP client is behind a DSL/Cable [NAT] router. You may have to
look for another command-line FTP program that supports Passive mode.

Actually about 10 minutes after I wrote this I was able to log on. Instead of 'username password ftp-www etc.' I just typed my password the second time. Thanks much for your replies!
