FTP Help - Router's fault?

T

T

Brief background.

I have 2 computers connected to Cable with a router.

My personal computer has the ip 192.168.1.102
So I setup the router to Forward a port for that ip address.

I also ftp files to my work server.

Ok, I came home the other day, and I was told that the computer had no
internet access.

So I turned on the computer, and there was no access.
I did an ipconfig, and my address was now: 192.168.1.100

Plus the connection wouldnt work correctly.
I tried releasing then renewing the ip address, but kept getting an
error.

Finally I gave up and shut off the computer.
The next day I tried it again, and the computer was working, but the
ip address was still 192.168.1.100.

Somehow the ip address was changed. How could this be? I turn off
all the computers, but the router is always on.

So I assumed that somehow the router freaked out. (what could have
happened?)

Anyway, I tried FTPing using the command prompt.
I can log into the server, I can do "cd" "prompt" and "bin"
but when I try "ls" "dir" "get Filename" "mget *"
it just hangs, then the connection gets closed by the server.

I tried my other computer and get the same result.

I know its not the server, since I tried another server also
(different company).
So it must be either my computer. (but I tried 2 computers) or my
router.

But what could be wrong with the router? (its a linksys)
I didnt notice a configuration for the ftp.
I also tried it with the firewall turned off, and samething.

Thanks

If you are behind a Linksys Router and you load a service that is to be available to the
Internet, you will have to set a static IP address on the server and forward the service
port(s) to the statically set IP address of said server.

Either that or place it in the DMZ, it would still have to be a static IP however.

As always I suggest blocking both TCP and UDP ports 135~139 and 445 on any Router.
On the Linksys BEFSR41, BEFSR81 and several other models the address is:
http://192.168.1.1/Filters.htm
