FTP connection error - XP professional SP2

I play several online games. In order for the games to update patches I need
to be able to access their ftp server. I get an FTP connection error! Please
check the internet line connection. If I disable my windows xp firewall I
can connect without a problem, but then I end up playing the game with no
firewall which makes me nervous. I have added the associated files to the
firewall exceptions, also added the correct ports to the exceptions. In
internet tools I have unchecked the passive ftp, and also tried it while
checked. Nothing seems to work. Any help would be appreciated.

What FTP client are you using?

I don't use a client at all as far as I know. I click on the shortcut to
start the game, it says connecting to FTP server, then after a minute or so I
get the error message. I guess the game client has its own ftp client built
in?

Not a very self-assuring arrangement if playing the game to get to its
FTP server requires turning the firewall off. One alternative might be
to put the game into a "trusted" zone, allowing a connection to "tunnel"
through the firewall. Read the firewall instructions on how to do this.
