FTP:connect problem - FTP does not work??

Have a wierd one here - when I try to download AVG updates or invoke IDM
(Internet Download Manager) they keep failing.

Upon further inspection I tried to manually invoke FTP from the command line
and I get this <bad, incorrect> response:

C:\>ftp
ftp: connect
C:\>

....instead of something like this (from another Win2000 system on the same
network):

C:\>ftp
ftp>quit
C:\>

What is the problem? is my FTP executable under C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
corrupt or ?

The crazy thing is that pinging remote systems works fine and IE can download
things correctly.

HELP!

Thanks,

- Mark

I had this problem for over a year. Finally figured out the issue.

Steps to fix.

open network connections
right click local area connections --> properties
click advanced tab
uncheck protect my computer and network by liminiting or preventing access to this computer from the internet
click ok
That fixed my problem. Hope it works for you.

are you behind a firewall? you'll need to add the ftp site you are trying
to contact to the "safe" zone (in ZA, the "trusted" zone). Also, once
connected you should type in the command: quote passv
to switch to passive mode; this will allow data conections from behind the
firewall.

Thanks for the responses but neither solution will work.

#1 The local area connection properties item "protect my computer..." was
unchecked

#2 This is not a firewall issue, as the ftp application cannot even put me
into
a normal session, much less access anything outside my LAN

Also, I have 2 other systems (both Win2K) that have no problems w/FTP. And
I can access FTP sites via IE.

Unfortunately this is beginning to look like a complete OS rebuild unless
someone
can give me an idea as to how I can proceed.

Thanks,

I got it working!!!!

Here is the solution:

- Check for Zone Alarm and remove it (ALL of it)
- Reinstall new version of Zone Alarm BUT make sure to restrict all
activity to i-net
- Fire up your browser and when ZA barks about i-net access, allow it.

Everytime something (service/program) attempts to access the internet,
go ahead and allow it.

- Fire up FTP and when ZA barks, allow it also.

This is how I got it working <for future reference>. Apparently I had
downloaded an old ZA version and disabled it (so I thought), but something
related to ZA was still running or ? and it turned FTP access off - literally.

At any rate it took finding all remnants of the old program and installing and
configuring a newer version. I also had some windows service spamming
god knows what and I set it to deny i-net access, thereby killing two birds
with one stone heh
