FSMO OPERATION FAILE

Thank you for your recent advice

I have successfully transferred operations master role from a 2000 DC to a 2003 DC. However I accidentally logged off the 2003 DC. Now when I try to revert the roles its displays ERROR under Operation Master (In Active Directory), and A message saying THE CURRENT OPERATIONS MASTER IS OFFLINE. THE ROLE CAN NOT BE TRANSFERRED. An Active Directory dialogue box comes up with a message “THE TRANSFER OF THE OPREATIONS MASTER ROLE CANNOT BE PERFORMED BECAUSE: THE REQUESTED FSMO OPERATION FAILED. THE CURRENT FSMO HOLDER COULD NOT BE CONTACTED. I have since brought the 2003 DC up. Please could you kindly advice me on how to solve this problem

Many thank

Carolin

If you cannot transfer roles - seize them

Use Ntdsutil command tool

1) At the command prompt run ntdsutil
2) You will see ntdsutil prompt (ntdsutil:
3) Type "roles
4) You will see "fsmo maintenance:
5) Type "help
6) There will be two main methods: Transfer and seize. Use Seize method if the old DC unavailable

Best Regards
