Hi everyone;
I have an IBM Netvista, celeron 800, I installed windows xp, now when I
start the sytem, it is ok until I move the mouse or try to do something, then
it freezes. I have checked and removed all the hardware one by one and
changed the Ram and all kinds of combinations but no resolution, I am really
frustrated, please help.

Try to go to Safe mode. If this works, then take a good look at your video
driver. It may be causing the problem.

BTW, did you do a fresh install or an update from a previous OS? Doing a
fresh install is always advisable.

yes, I could boot into safe mode, in device manager, everything looks fine,
the vedio is integrated and I also tried using a PCI card instead, didn't
work either. I have done a fresh install not an upgrade.

Why are you having to install XP, Windows comes pre-installed on all

Er, no. Pre-installed windows is not free. The OEM passes the cost
of the OS onto the consumer.

In fact it's so free the price is hidden in the price of the computer.

Sorry, but that's nonsense. First of all, it comes pre-installed
on *some* PCs, certainly not all.

Second, it's never free. If it comes with the PC, it's bundled
together with the computer, and a single price is charged to both
together.

If Safe mode is working, then download the latest (or next to the latest)
version of the video driver for XP. Hopefully it is signed for XP.

I'd say most, at this point. Certainly Dell doesn't
exactly prominently display its Alternative Workstations
program on its front page specials. (Actually, it's
not quite that bad, but one does have to do at least one
additional click. The fact that Dell "recommends Windows
XP" doesn't help, either, though in all fairness it's
probably what they're most familiar with.)

It's a slow change.

And Microsoft gets its cut regardless. :)

But the consumer doesn't see the cost on his invoice. Therefore,
it's free.

:)

And it also depends on how soft the market for such equipment is.

Nope, I wrote it in miscrosoft.windowsxp.general. You may have
read it in comp.os.linux.advocacy, because it was crossposted
there.

I'd say most, at this point.

"Most" is probably correct, but it doesn't matter whether it's
most, a few, or something in between. He said "all" and that's
very much wrong, as I pointed out.

And Microsoft gets its cut regardless. :)

Of course. They're in business to make money, not to give things
away for free.

Too bad you can not use the internet in safe mode. lol

Anyways yes install the latest drivers for your pc. It should have come with
your pc on a CD or disk. Some now with a dvd. ;)

If not get from another computer and burn to cd or whatever and install that
way. Not just grahpic drivers either. But all the drivers needed by your pc.

BTW if you mange to get into normal mode download and run this:

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/HCT12.mspx#EAAA

And post results. And run windows update now.

What is the onboard video adaptor make/model? Some brands seem to
require that the latest version of DirectX be installed before the video
adaptor driver is installed.

That's certainly the standard marketing man's line. We often
see the supermarket "buy 2, get 1 free". Well, in the maths
I learnt at school, that's a volume discount of 1/3 if you
buy 3 or more, there's nothing for free there.
And it also depends on how soft the market for such equipment is.
