Frontpage preview not WYSIWYG - Lines Mashed Together

K

Keith

I have forever had this problem. FP is not WYSIWYG !!

The only "fix" is a kludge - I have to add additional line breaks -
especially where I use Bold, Large headers - the Preview shows the
lines mashed together and overlapping. It looks HORRIBLE !! Then
when I publish the page, it is a lot better, but still does the
mashing if the line is forced to go to a second line because it runs
out of space.

But when I publish - although they are still a bit too close together
for what I expect - at least they do not overlap.

Here is an example - I took 3 screenshots and placed them into one
large GIF file for comparison - here is the file:

www.infocellar.com/FPproblem.gif

If you want to see the actual website with that page:

http://www.infocellar.com/msoffice/index.htm and click on "Table of
Contents" in the left Frame. You will see the line is forced to go to
a second line because it has enough width on the page to stay as one
line. And the two are mashed together slightly (but not as much as in
FP preview).

Now - the page all by itself, unframed looks OK because the line is
NOT forced to go to a second line because it has enough width on the
page to stay as one line. Shouldn't the IE browser realize the font
is 24-point and then adjust the next line down appropriately?
http://www.infocellar.com/msoffice/word-toc.htm

Can anyone shed some light on this "Preview" problem? I am not
getting WYSIWYG, like I should. Is it just a glitch in FP2000 ??
Will I need to shell out the dough to upgrade? TIA

The CSS Word creates causes this.
You should remove all formatting from text that you copy and paste from
Word. Then use FP's formatting tools.
When you paste text from Word, you should choose Paste Special from the
edit menu and select text only or you can copy it to Notepad first and
then copy it from there to FP.

If you are indeed using Word to create your content ...
don't. If you do, you will continue to have problems and
be frustrated.

For what it's worth, there is no such thing as a WYSIWYG HTML authoring
system. The WYS part is not so hard, it's the WYG one that's tricky, given
the fact that there are oodles of browsers that interpret code slightly
differently....

K

Keith

The problem is that I have a ton of large Word files that I had to
convert to FP, so I really had no choice. I used the "Save as Web
Page Filtered" option, then had to get rid of the problem where the
file will opn in Word instead of FP, so I right-clicked on the HTM
file and select "Open . . . in Frontpage", then edited the file to
remove the "div section" line and removed the large "style" section at
the top - then finally saved it.

This does remove the Word format characters - but I guess not all of
them. The only other way was a "Word-to-HTML" editor, which did not
do a good job. I realize I could save it to a text file and then
paste it into FP and re-edit it all - but these files are just too
long, and too many - plus they are full of inserted pics.

If you are indeed using Word to create your content ...
don't. If you do, you will continue to have problems and

Since you have a project ahead of you, I suggest that you
use the program Pure Text. I will eliminate half the copy
and paste work. You simply copy the page to the clipboard,
click on the Pure Text icon on the task bar and paste into
your FrontPage document. You'll still have to format it.

BTW: MS Office 2003 can do the filtering too....

1.. On the "File menu", click "Save As".
2.. If you have not saved the file before, enter a new name for the file
in the File name box.
3.. In the "Save as type" box, click "Web Page, Filtered".
4.. Click "Save".

I have hundreds of pages on my site that were edited in Word and then
dragged from Windows explorer onto an open page in FP. I have been doing
this since 1998, and I have never had a problem. Plus it keeps all my
formatting.

If you don't believe me, check it out. www.dipika.org. All of the articles
were edited in word 2000 and then dragged onto the page. It's a great
timesaver.

| | | | | The problem is that I have a ton of large Word files that I had to

| | |
| | | This does remove the Word format characters - but I guess not all of

The round-tripping effect is a little strange.
It still puts in MSO stuff at the top but much better than I thought.
Haven't tried the CSS export yet.

It works great!

I used it for a collage site where they had 300~400 pages they wanted on
their web site. It took about 4 hours to do them all... (most of them were
made with Office 97 some 2000) I was using Office 2000 to convert to HTML
and then used the filter to remove the Office formatting from the pages.
(Just a lot of clicking) But it paid well.....

It does work pretty good. I did have trouble resetting table border color from the Word version (black borders) to the beige I wanted in the web...finally got it. May have something to do with the CSS but I'm too bleary-eyed to pursue it now.

THANKS for the link!! - wish I had it yesterday...I was mucking around with converting Word->Excel Table->HTML table...sheesh.

| | | |
