Frontpage / Open Web / Random Display Order

I found a partial solution to a problem many users here have with the
display order of webs in the Open Web dialog of FrontPage 2002/XP.
Symptoms include the Views button being Grayed Out and the order of
Webs listed in a random order (it actually seems to be in the order of
last access). I have yet to see any solution that fixes any part of
this. But I may have found a partial solution, at least. Read on ...

Ineffective suggestions posted thus far include:

1. Right-clicking the Open Web window and selecting Arrange By. There
is no such option in the right-click properties menu.

2. Using the View option. The view option is grayed out and
inaccessible.

3. Using Tools / Customize / Options to de-select some option about
displaying item in order of my most recently accessed. There is no
such option.

Partial solution/work-around found:
I found the registry entry that FP 2002 uses to control the Open Web
View settings. Deleting its "Data" value doesn't restore the Views
button but it DOES reset the web order to alphabetic. Hurray!

1. Close all instances of FrontPage XP/2002
2. Open RegEdt32
3. Navigate to the following branch:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/
Office/10/Common/Open Find/Microsoft FrontPage/
Settings/Open Web/View

4. Be safe! Save that key. Right click on it in the left pane and
choose export to save as some file like "FPXP OpenWeb Views".

5. Under the Views key, you should see 2 subkeys: "(default)" and
"Data".
Delete the entire "Data" key by clicking it once, then Delete. When
you next run FP, it will recreate this key with a value that lists the
Webs in alphabetic order.

6. Exit Registry Editor
7. Start FP
8. Open Web should now show webs in alphabetic sequence.

I assume this is NOT a permanent fix and may have to use it again. It
also does not re-enable the grayed-out Views button. But, with 100+
web sites, seeing them in alpha order again is simply wonderful!

PS: Once you're under the covers, you'll also see the anatomy for
other FP Open Dialogs, including "Open File". If they are not
performing to your satisfaction, you can use the same technique on
them.

I would still like to see an explanation of the cause of this problem
and a complete solution that also re-enables the Views button. But,
alas, no one, including MS, seems to understand this problem. I
suspect it may be a result of an Office patch or an interaction with a
common and popular piece of some other software.

A safer method: (no registry edit) (tested with FP2003)

Open FrontPage
File - Open [NOT Open Site or Open Web]
The Views button is active, Choose Details view, and sort file list as
required.
Cancel the dialogue.
File - Open Site/Web [Views button disabled, but the list will be sorted as
above]
