FrontPage and Web folder problem

Sorry for the duplicate post, but I listed the wrong alias
and wanted a microsoft MVP to respond if I got no response
withi 48 hours from anyone else. Here is my problem:

I am working on an issue with Frontpage 2000 and web
folders. A few years ago I created a website with the 60
minute intranet kit. Users in my network have access via
web folders to publish content to the folders on the
intranet site. Everything has worked well for over two
years.

Recently when I try to create a web folder within windows
2000 pro the user gets the message: The folder you entered
does not appear to be valid. Please choose another. If the
user attempts to access a web folder that was previously
created they receive the message: You do not have
permission to access this web folder location.

I have also noticed that when I try to publish to the
website using Frontpage 2000 I receive the message: A web
does not exist at http:// <website name>> would you like
to create one. If I answer yes, it gives an error a web
site cannot be created and lists several reasons, all of
which do not appear to be valid.

I think the two problems are related. So far in my search
everything points to a user issue or a workstation issue.
I think it's a server issue since multiple users are
having the problem.

I have tried uninstalling / reinstalling the FP extensions
on the server and I have ran the web folder repair tool on
my 2000 machine. I have checked NTFS permissions on the
server folders and all the effected users have the proper
permissions.

You can not create a root web from within FP, the web must be set and extended with the FP
extensions from within the IIS MMC.

Other then the above, I really can help as I do not work directly with Web Folders. I only access
webs via FP's File Menu | Open Web command.

Hello Thomas,

Thank you for posting.

From your message, my understanding is that your network user can't access
your web folders and you can not publish your web site by using FrontPage
2000. If I have misunderstood the question, feel free to let me know.

Please help me to collect the following information. I appreciate your
time.
1. How do you create a web folder within windows 2000 pro? (The steps)
What are the troubleshooting steps you perform to create the web folder and
reproduce the issue?
2. What are the several listed reasons in the error message which
tells you that site cannot be created? Please let me know the error message
in detail. Also, you may capture a screen shot of the error for me so that
I can understand the issue clearly.

To capture a screen shot, please follow the steps below:

Step 1: When the error message appears, press the Pr Scrn key located at
the
top-right corner of the keyboard to capture a screen shot.

Step 2: Click Start, select Run, type MSPAINT in the Open box, and then
click OK.

Step 3: Use Ctrl + V to paste the screen shot to the canvas. When we are
prompted
to enlarge the bitmap, press Y or Enter.

Step 4: Click the File (or press Alt+ F) menu and select Save.

Step 5: Select Desktop in the 'Save in' box and type 'screen' in the File
name
box.

Step 6: Select JPEG in the Save as type box and click OK.

The screen shot is located on the Desktop and named screen.jpg. You may
send it to me ([email protected]).

3. From our database, I found that this issue may be caused by the
eRoom Server Software version 4.2. Do you have it on your system?

Please let me know the information above so that I can provide further
assistance on this problem. I am looking forward to your reply.

Sincerely,
Jacky Gu

I am not trying to create anything new, I am simply trying
to figure out why this stopped working after working fine
for several years. Would you suggest I post to the Windows

I would suggest post to the Windows 2000 Professional or General newsgroup, as web folders are a

Hi Jacky,

I am the user with the problem.

Thanks for your response. The process we go through to
create a web folder is as follows:
1. Right click on My Computer and select map network
drive.
2. From the map network drive screen I click the
link, create a shortcut to a web folder or ftp site.
3. At the welcome to Add Network Place wizard I type
the URL to the Web server / file share. Example http://anh-
inet/documents
4. A dialog appears titled cannot find folder, with
the message, "The folder you entered does not appear to be
valid. Please choose another.

The path is valid, and the server is operational. I can
reach the folder via a network share using
\\servername\sharename. This has worked flawlessly for
several years and I can't seem to figure out what
happened. In a related note: When a normal user goes to
our intranet site hosted on this server and tries to open
a document in the same folder they are prompted for
credentials. They can enter their logon credentials and
click OK but the authentication box returns. However if
they press cancel, the document is presented and they can
open it and print it without problem. This would seem to
indicate a permissions issue. If I go to the same folder
and attempt to open a file it opens without prompting. I
am a member of the domain admins group; they are members
of domain users. In the IIS side of things the IIS
anonymous user account has read and execute permissions to
these folders.

I have many web folder connections to the server in
question listed in my Network places on my personal PC
that where created prior to this problem occurring. When I
double click on them a dialog appears, "You do not have
permission to access this Web Folder location." I am a
domain admin I should have permission to everything!!

I have created a screen shot which contains the errors I
receive in Front Page. The screen shot is attached to the
email.

Hope this further clarifies the issue.

Thanks,

JK

Hello John,

Thanks for your reply. I agree with Thomas. From the information you sent
me, I believe that the problem should be related with Window 2000.

I would suggest posting in the newsgroup below:

Jacky,

The server that contains the website is actually an NT
server running IIS 4.0. Do you still recomend posting to
the other group?

Yes, unless there is still a NT group.
