FrontPage and FTP

I've been getting more and more error messages regarding corruption of
FP extensions on my host's server, and my host (Earthlink) is unable
or unwilling to remedy the situation. First, my discussion group
stopped functioning. Next, I was unable to recalculate links. Now,
FP can't even read my site and display a directory. I can't even back
up the site!

I obviously can't live with this host anymore and need to move my
files elsewhere. It had been suggested in this NG that I can do this
by simply publishing to the new host, but now I no longer have the
ability to simply publish.

I've heard in the past that using FTP with FrontPage is a bad idea.
What will happen if I use a program like WS-FTP to back up my site?
Will I lose everything, or only sections that depend on FP components
(or nothing at all)?

Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Isidore

You can use FTP to download the entire site to a folder on your HD, then open this folder in FP, but
you will have to re-do/build all functions that used FP webbots, like the form, discussion web,
guest book, themes, shared borders, FP Includes, etc.

You should always have a local copy of your web to begin with, and then publish to the remote
server, to avoid these types of issues.

Have you discussed this with anyone at Earthlink? I don't know about their
web-hosting service, but they are my e-mail server, and they have always
been helpful when it came to a problem.

Talking to Earthlink's web hosting tech support (and customer
relations) has been one of the worst support experiences I've ever
suffered through. I've spent literally hours on the phone and got
nothing accomplished. The people were courteous and apologized
regularly and liberally, but they absolutely refused to take any
responsibility for the problems I've been experiencing. I can't even
back up the site, and they refuse to do it for me (as some of the
other hosts I deal with do as a matter of course). I spoke to
technicians at all levels of their heirarchy, and it always seemed as
if they were working from a script. One senior techie told me that
Earthlink would like to get out of the web hosting business, although
customer support people I mentioned this to deny it. I'm sure
Earthlink is a reliable ISP, but as a web hosting service, they are
inept, disdainful of their customers, and far too expensive. Thanks
for this opportunity to make this ringing endorsement. :)
