FrontPage 2003 - Lost Navigation Structure

I have my web published using FP2002 and it's fine. Upgraded to FP2003 and
decided to backup my web so did a "reverse" publish to my local h/d using
fp2003.
When I open this backup copy there is no navigation structure! Although I
could restructure this manually I would rather prefer to know what happened
to my structure! I am not using FP Extensions but do have shared borders and
navigation turned on.

The Navigation structure is stored in the FP extensions. With no
FPextensions on the server, the navigation structure is lost on the server.
When you publish down to the hard disc, you must reconstruct the Navigation
View.

Navigation structure in the local web is retained by the local disc-based
web extensions, until you overwrite the web by reverse publishing.

But why then does the navigation work fine on the remote web server with FP

When you save the page, the navigation code is hardcoded in the page. This
is not the same as the navigation structure, which is saved in one of the
_vti* folders.

When you publish to an extended site, the navigation structure is published
along with the pages. When you publish to a non-extended site, the
navigation structure is not published, but the link bars are still hard
coded in the pages so the navigation works.

Reverse publishing from an extended site brings down the navigation
structure and the pages. Reverse publishing from a non-extended site only
downloads the pages, and it is not possible to rebuild the navigation
structure from just the link bars - the structure itself is required.

Many thanks Ronx! So Navigation view in FP is really a design time feature
that creates the links. Pity the structure files cannot be uploaded when
publishing to a non-extended host then they would be available for download .
I have resisted turning FPSEs on so as to keep my options open on hosting.
Presumably I can just copy the local web on my h/d for backup purposes?

Yes. Zip the local web and burn the zip file to CD or wherever. The Zip
file makes restoring the web much easier, since there will be no problems
with read only attributes.

The server extensions are now readily available at most
hosting locations without additional charges. 6 to 8 years
ago they were a hassle and the hosting sites charged extra.
those days are gone, and only their legacy remains.

There are litterally thousands of hosting companies, and
most have a Control Panel setup so that the webmaster can
uninstall and reinstall the extensions should they become
corrupted.

I had a problem publishing a couple of days ago and my hosting service
suggested that I uninstall and reinstall the FrontPage extensions to correct
the problem. I followed their suggestion and then published a new page, which
worked. I later went back to the host server site and discovered that in the
navigation view I had only the index page, plus the new page that I had just
published. All of the other pages are still there and working, but they no
longer appear in the navigation view. I use FP 2002. Any suggestions?

Did you re-publish the complete site selecting to overwrite all files, etc. ?

No, my site is 398 MB at this point .... I don't have DSL, so republishing is
a last resort. I opened the remote site in FP and drug the folders to the
navigation view to restore the folders as they were before the extensions
change.

The pages were all functioning during this time, only the navigation view
was affected. Is that a normal occurance after reinstalling the extensions?
My host server support wasn't sure why it happened.

It depends it the host/control panel completely remove the extensions from the site. FP extensions
should really never be uninstalled unless you have good working copy locally or if you don't plan to
use them after the removal.

I'm not sure if the extensions were completely removed from the site. I know
that my hit counters stopped working during the transition and then the
navigation view problem occured. When you say a good working copy locally,
are you talking about the website on my computer, or the FP extensions?
