FrontPage 2002 broken by SP3 ?

It would appear that the Office XP Service Pack 3 broke FrontPage. Since
installing it everytime I open a html file with FP it sends diag info
home and FP ceases to work.

I tried an uninstall/reinstall - first just FP and then *all* of Office
XP and the problem persisted even without installing SP3. Thus I'm lead
to believe that SP3 installed some common files that are not
over-written during a clean install and/or there is some registry
setting broken.

Has anyone else seen this and if so is there a circumvention/fix?

My environment is Windows XP Pro SP1 on a Compaq Evo N600c laptop.

Thanks

Hi Lionel,

If you run winmsd, check under Office 10 Applications->Office
Event/Application Fault, you should see a Bucket ID there. Just mail it
across and let's check if we have anything on that.

Regards,
Vijay

One more tidbit - immediately after opening a html page to work on
Frontpage in the lower left indicates that it is "Retrieving Data" and
then the error popup occurs to send the data to MS.

Hi Lionel,

Nothing came up on those buckets!

1. Try this command in the Run popup: frontpg /safe
2. If this again results in the same error, then as soon as u open frontpg,
start pressing ESC key.
3. If that too doesn't help, then find and send me the version and size of
the vetredir.dll file AND also the .log file under C:\Documents and
Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson

Vijay

Hi Lionel,

You could paste the DR Watson log file contents here and I will check that
to see if I can find anything.

Regards,
Vijay

I hadn't realized that - I'm sorry. I was just thinking that if he
wanted me to continue to post large files (like the drwatson log) that
it would be better offline from the NG.

I've been known to be wrong before.

The MVPs are following this issue, and we are having it researched, so we're
all interested. As would be other folks who might be soon to have the
problem.

Problem solved/circumvented.

Thanks to a suggestion to try RegSeeker to clean up the registry after
an uninstall and before a reinstall.

What I did:

1. downloaded and installed Regseeker
2. ran the RegSeeker registry cleanup - found 579 entries to cleanup
- deleted all of them
3. rebooted (as I wanted to see if there were any issues
created by the cleanup)
4. after the reboot - everything looked fine
5. tried FP 2002 and it worked fine

???

Hi Lionel,

I agree with Tom. It's good to hear that the issue is resolved.

Just a thought on the issue, On looking at the log file and the previous
event viewer logs this is what I could figure out, maybe someone else might
have a better explanation.

In one of the earlier mails it said :
3/12/2004 5:49 PM Application Error Faulting application frontpg.exe,
version 10.0.6308.0, faulting module vetredir.dll, version 1.0.0.1,

I was trying to figure out whom the vetredir.dll belongs to! I found the
answer in the watson file - ZoneLabs\vetredir.dll

I have seen a few issues related to FrontPage and the ZoneLabs internet
security tools, and this might have been one of those!

Regards,
Vijay

That is interesting on the zonelabs and that dll. But how come the
regseeker cleanup seemed to solve things?

Just currious now since all is working.

Hi Lionel,

Again, cannot confirm this - but my guess would be that you did have
Zonelabs s/w at some point of time (??) then you uninstalled it (at some
point of time), but because the DLL vetredir.dll was in use it was not
deleted from your system. I am not sure how regseeker works, but possibly
it found somehow that this dll is not used by any app and hence
unregistered it !!! [Major assumptions ;) ]

Vijay

I do have ZoneAlarm Pro (ZAP) installed. Had it before SP3 and still do
and FP worked before SP3 was installed with ZAP and didn't work after
SP3. It began once RegSeeker cleaned the registry.

Whatever - I'm glad its working now.

I used a registry cleaner once - caused me problems that I didn't have prior
to installing that mess. I'll never do that again. My registry may be messy
or have left over pieces of whatever but it works and THAT's what I like.

I do have ZoneAlarm Pro (ZAP) installed. Had it before SP3 and still do
and FP worked before SP3 was installed with ZAP and didn't work after
SP3. It began once RegSeeker cleaned the registry.

Whatever - I'm glad its working now.

Regards,
Vijay

|
| That is interesting on the zonelabs and that dll. But how come the
| regseeker cleanup seemed to solve things?
|
| Just currious now since all is working.
