From workgroup to domain (retaining user profiles)

I have 1200 computers. I'm currently using Novell but am planning to
migrate to Win2k3 (using AD and all...). All the users currently sign
onto their PCs with a local account. While users will NOT be using
roaming profiles, they will be logging in with their new domain
account (Domain account will retain same username and password as
local account). Is there a way I can make the domain user account use
the existing local profile? I've tried in a test environment, and
this is what I get:

Local user: test
user profile for local user: c:\documents and settings\test
Domain user: test
user profile for domain user: c:\documents and settings\test.domain

My biggest issue is trying to set up 1200 new accounts on 1200 PC's.
If you have any suggestions (i'm sure other people have had this
problem but I had a hard time finding it in the news group) I would
greatly appreciate it.
