We have posted countless times in this group that you should never overwrite
a PST file. It will corrupt your profile. It corrupted yours. You need to
create a new profile.
Place the PST file to any directory on your hard drive except the default
(so you don't overwrite a PST file), then configure Outlook to use it.
The Help files contain instructions.

Gregory, you wrote on Tue, 6 Sep 2005 15:48:07 -0700:

all Outlook 2002 settings, from an older system, to the new computer. Well,
I installed it, and did not set up any accounts in OL2003. I then copied
the PST file from the old system (OL2002) over the 2003 PST file that was
created when I installed onto the new system.

It all seemed to work O.K., but not quite :-( I now have two copies of my
"Personal Folders" and *all* their sub-folders. I can't delete either of
the copies. They also appear to somehow be cross-connected. If I delete a
message from the inbox in one of the "Personal Folders", the deletion is
reflected in the other copy, as well.

I need to find a solution, so that I can start using OL2003. Any ideas?
Can I delete both "Personal Folders" and start fresh? How do I transfer the
old PST (about 500 Mb) to the 2003 set-up? Even if I have to
uninstall/reinstall OL2003, an start from scratch, I don't mind. Anything
to solve this situation :-( and get me out of this bind.

Also, I have found no way to copy/import?? my account (have multiple)
settings from the old system (OL2002) to the new system (OL2003), and don't
remember all the passwords, etc. Is there a way, or a tool that will help
me do that?

Create a new profile!

Control Panel | Mail | Show Profiles

Start Outlook with this new profile and open the pst-file from your old
installation (Outlook 2002).

File | Open | Outlook Datafile

Now copy all items from this pst-file in to the new one (drag & drop).
After you have done this, close this personal folder by rightclick |
close.

Thanks Russ, this will hopefully solve my problem as well

I hope so, too. This problem has become very common in Outlook 2003 for two
reasons:
1. Outlook 2003 creates a new, empty, default PST file for every new profile
that uses Internet transports.
2. If users follow all of the Help file instructions for migrating an older
PST file, they will corrupt their profile. The Help files tell them to copy
their old PST file to Outlook's default directory. Doing so, will overwrite
the new default PST file and corrupt the profile.
It has never been permissible to overwrite a PST file. Microsoft needs to
correct their Help file.

Also, if users want to start using the newer PST file format instead of
their former file, they should use the procedure Christian has outlined.
Most users won't need to do so.

Outlook has no native way to transfer account settings.
You can try Office's Save My Settings Wizard, or look over the information

Thanks, Russ. I shifted through the last few hundred messages before I
posted, but didn't see anything that sounded helpful, that's why I posted
the message. Sorry, I can uderstand how frustrating it can be, repeating
the same trivial solutions over-and-over again.

I am in the process of trying to correct the error I made, and transfer the
PST data. Your help is really appreciated.

Tanks for the pointers. I did take a look, but did not see a way to
transfer accounts. I also could not find a way to transfer rules. I just
can't believe that Microsoft would release a product (OL2003) that would not
have the ability to easily let he user migrate from the previous version,
OL2002. I wonder what their rationale was.

Anyway, I'll go back and dig some more.

Thanks for the help!!

They are, but I see no way to transfer them from the old PST file to the new
one. I was able to import most of the info, but don'r see an option to
import rules.

Export the rules from your old pst-file

Tools | Rules and Alerts | Button "Options" | Export

To import the rules in your new file open Outlook with this pst-file as
standard file and do the same like above, but use "Import".
