Friend can't boot from CD

Due to the fact that she can't get her IE to work, a
friend needs to, according to Microsoft, boot from her CD,
but when she does so, it's asking for a password in order
to enter setup. What password?? She reset her
administrator password and tried using that, but it
doesn't work. She'd post here herself, but can't get here
from there!

Help her.. she's driving me nuts!!! :)

Penny;
That is a BIOS password and has nothing to do with Windows.
Someone set the password.
Check the manual or contact the manufacturer for BIOS password reset
instructions.

If it is a laptop, it may need to go for service.
If a desktop, a simple jumper setting is usually all that is needed.

Sounds more like the recovery console password.

Boot from the CD, when asked to hit R for the Recovery Console - don't. Hit
Enter instead and opt to do a repair install of the existing installation of
XP.

Possibly, but I still think it is BIOS.
"it's asking for a password in order to enter setup" sounds a lot like
the BIOS password.

I agree with Jupiter, as they are trying to change the PC to boot from CD,
to do that you must enter the BIOS setup if the PC is not already setup to
boot from CD. Some setup the PC so noone can enter the BIOS to alter it
unless they know the password - her is where the OP has the problem, it has
been set and they either had no knowledge of it being set (3rd Party setup)
or they have set it and forgot the password - either way, it may have a
procedure to reset the BIOS password, either with a jumper or in desperate
measures, removing the motherboard battery for about 30-60 minutes with the
PC unplugged from the outlet (warning - any other customized BIOS setup will
be lost also). Also, if it is a laptop, I've seen some where you actually
had to send back in to the manufacturer for reset, if you've forgot the BIOS
supervisor password.
