I just did a fresh install of XPSP2 for my new motherboard (ABit KN8),
and everything is up and running except networking.. kinda.
The computer can connet to the network and see and access workgroup
computers, but can't access the internet.

It gets an error with ipconfig/renew about not being able to reach the
DHCP server and times out.
My laptop, connected to the network via the same hub can access the
internet just fine.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Try with the windows firewall disabled or enable firewall logging and check
the log file to see if a dhcp offer or something is refused.

Are you using a hub or a router? If a hub, then you don't have a DHCP
server and need to set DNS and IP address manually. What kind of
internet connection do you have? When you do ipconfig, what do you get
for an IP address (if it is a public IP address, then just "x" out some
of it to protect your privacy). We need more details about your
connection and your hardware.

It's in an apartment complex w/ high speed internet. network cable from
the wall, to a 10/100 5 port switch, connect computers to the switch.

The setup used to work before replacing the motherboard in the desktop.
The lap top is still able to connect fine. I've tried manually setting
the IP, Gateway, and DNS by taking the laptop's settings then renewing
the IP on the laptop (so there is no IP conflict).

The laptop picks up a new IP flawlessly and can connect to the
Internet, while the desktop can only access the Network. I was able to
install the latest drivers on the desktop by copying them into a shared
folder, so I am 100% sure that the NIC works at least in that sense.

I still haven't tried enabling the logging to see if the DHCP request
is refused, I'll try that and let you know how it turns out

Thank you for the help.

Are you in control of the router or does this belong to the apartment
management? The router might need to be rebooted. Otherwise, manually
assign an IP address, gateway, and DNS. Use the gateway and DNS
settings from the machine that works.
