I have freezing problems... can't leave the PC alone for more than 2
minutes... freezes. I then have to shut down and restart... blue screen
appears... I let it run and it doesn't resolve anything... did this at least
10 times... nothing resolved... still freezes. tried to do a defrag and can't
get past 10% analyzing then it freezes. Please help!

Thanks,

Without knowing the Stop Error (the white writing on the blue screen), I
can't give you any specific help. However, from your description of the
computer's behavior I would be first looking at hardware issues.

Standard caveat: Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out
suspected parts with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing
yourself and/or are uncomfortable opening your computer, take the
machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local
equivalent of BigStoreUSA). Have all your data backed up before you take
the machine into a shop.

Malke,

Thanks for your help... The screen white letters read as follows: "checking
file system C: The type of system is FAT 32. One of your discs needs to be
checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check but it is strongly
recommended that you continue. To skip the disk check, press any key
within... then a countdown begins 9... 8... 7... 6... etc.

What I didn't mention is that if I'm working on the computer... no matter
how long... nothing happens. However, when I step away for whatever reason
for more than ten minutes... I find the computer stopped, frozen, or whatever
word you want to use when I come back.

Nothing moves... nothing! Again... I have to press the shut off button and
restart.

Just remembered something else, sorry... I'm very frustrated about this but
I can't run a scan either. The only scan I can run is in safe mode and only
the short one, (quick scan). I have Webroot.

Thanks again!

I'm sorry but without actually seeing your computer I can't determine if
the problems are hardware or software related. The error message you are
getting indicates that your file system is corrupt and this could be
caused by malware or by failing hardware. Webroot is not an antivirus.
All scans for viruses/malware should be run in Safe Mode anyway.

1. Make sure your data is backed up to external media (another hard
drive, CD/DVD-R).

2. Follow the instructions at this link to scan for viruses and malware:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Post back with the results before we go further.

Standard caveat: If the procedures look too complex - and there is no
shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a
professional computer repair shop (not your local version of
BigStoreUSA). Please be aware that not all local shops are skilled at
removing malware and even if they are, your computer may be so infested
that Windows will need to be clean-installed. Have all your data backed
up before you take the machine into a shop.

Thanks for your help... I'll give your suggestions a try... although... I'm a
bit puzzled as to why, (after asking me specifically what was on the blue
screen in white letters), you didn't bother to address my answer, nor the
rest of my comments.

Address what answer? I did answer you - the "white letters" say that
Chkdsk is running which, as I said, indicates that "The error message
you are getting indicates that your file system is corrupt and this
could be caused by malware or by failing hardware.". What part of that
answer didn't you understand?

I did address your other comments - you said you could only scan in Safe
Mode and I said basically - that's fine, you should only be scanning for
malware in Safe Mode anyway. And I gave you a link to complete malware
removal instructions which use tools other than Webroot's SpySweeper.

Because your computer is not here in my shop where I can see it, if you
want help you need to do some troubleshooting so we can narrow down
whether the errors are caused by software (such as malware) or hardware.
Therefore I asked you to start troubleshooting by determining if the
computer is clean. Hence my links to malware removal instructions. Since
you can work on the computer, checking for malware is a logical first step.

I don't really see where I didn't address your issues but if you didn't
understand something I said, please do come back and ask for clarification.

Again, please make sure your important data is backed up before doing
anything else.
